What A Life...

While I was away in New Brunswick for a week with Mady, Eliot got really sick. Last Sunday night was really tough on both him and Steve. Apparently, Eliot had a seizure at 9pm on Sunday, another at 1am on Monday morning, and then another at 4am, and another at 7:30am. Meanwhile, he was vomiting and wouldn't eat his food or drink his water. Steve thought he was dying. So off Steve went at 8am on Monday morning up to Guelph to deliver Eliot to the vet. They kept him for two days observation and testing. The gave him an x-ray to check for blockages in his gastrointestinal tract and also to see if the hemangiosarcoma (cancer of the cells that make blood vessels) that he'd had last year, had spread to his spleen, heart, or lungs. They put him on IV drip of Diazepam (Valium) to make sure the seizures stopped (he had one seizure while at the vet) and they put him on fluids and gave him special food to help his stomach. He's lost 1/2 a kilogram, so they were a bit concerned. Anyway, the x-ray was all clear - no cause for concern. They did find a bit of blood in his urine, so he's on antibiotics. They also gave us some more emergency doses of Diazepam in case he gets into a cluster of seizures again. We're to administer it if he has a seizure longer than 5 minutes, or more than two seizures in 24 hrs. So, with a $1100 vet bill, Eliot is home and looking much better. Poor dog - what a life!
